A new post-debate poll indicates Congressman Andy Biggs strengthened his position in Arizona’s Republican gubernatorial primary, holding a commanding lead as early voting gets underway across the state.
According to a NextGen Polling survey, Biggs leads the Republican field with 57% support among likely GOP primary voters. Congressman David Schweikert trails with 11%, while 5% support other candidates and 28% remain undecided.
The survey sampled 1,683 likely Republican primary voters and was conducted June 16-17, immediately following last week’s Republican gubernatorial debate. The poll reports a ±2.5% margin of error at the 95% confidence level.
The results suggest the debate did little to alter the trajectory of the race. Instead, Republican voters appear to be consolidating behind Biggs as ballots begin arriving in mailboxes across Arizona. NextGen Polling also found Biggs leading across every demographic group and geographic region included in the survey, underscoring the breadth of his support heading into the final weeks before the primary.
The latest numbers add to a growing body of public polling that has consistently shown Biggs at the top of the Republican field. The congressman has also entered the final weeks of the primary with several high-profile endorsements, including President Donald Trump’s endorsement. Biggs has centered his campaign on border security, election integrity, reducing government spending, and other priorities that have resonated with conservative grassroots activists. Schweikert, by contrast, has emphasized his experience in Congress and reputation as a fiscal policy expert.
Rather than simply choosing between two candidates, Republican primary voters appear to be deciding what direction they want the Arizona Republican Party to take in the years ahead. Biggs has campaigned as the candidate of the conservative grassroots, while Schweikert has leaned on his experience and policy credentials. If the latest polling is any indication, Arizona Republicans are increasingly rallying behind a more grassroots, activist-driven vision for the party.
With early voting now underway and the Republican primary approaching, the latest survey suggests Biggs enters the voting period with significant momentum and a sizable advantage over the rest of the Republican field.
